Being a fan of Gogol Bordello and seeing Eugene Hutz’s brilliant performance in his debut film of the compelling Everything Is Illuminated, I wanted to see what else he’s capable of on the screen, though I went in without high expectations. I think Madonna at the helm of this project instilled that hesitation in me. I found the acting good, and the story intriguing. Three roommates are trying to find their niche in society like we all are. What will they do to find what they are looking for? Most anything, and the audience follows along on their journey.

I was looking forward to this film, if for no other reason than to see what kind of job Madonna did on her directorial debut. What a jumbled mess. At least she still has her music career. I did laugh out loud at a few jokes, and thought Vicky McClure was adorable. However, Eugene Hutz’ accent was so thick in places that I had trouble understanding anything he said. As seems typical these days, it seems the film was trying to be more artsy than it actually is – or deserves to be.

This is the ultimate Monroe film. The one where she stands over a subway grating on a hot summer night to feel the rush of cool air from the trains passing beneath—the rush of air blowing the skirt of her sexy white halter dress up around her. But there’s a movie that goes with this legendary image and it’s a classic. Based on the adult Broadway play, “Itch” was watered down for the screen and stars Tom Ewell as the frustrated married man and Monroe as the Girl Upstairs. One hot New York summer, a man sends his wife and small son away for the summer—as all New York men do this time of the year according to Ewells’ narration. He’s left alone in their apartment to struggle with his vices—cigarettes and booze—when all of a sudden the Girl moves in sub-letting the apartment upstairs. She’s a TV model and commercial actress and delightfully portrayed by Monroe. The homely and dumpy Ewell begins having steamy sex fantasies visualizing himself as a powerful lover irrestible to women. Monroe wants to be neighborly so she keeps inviting herself down to his flat frustrating the hopelessly timid Ewell. She doesn’t realize her effect on him but he’s got an air condtioner and it’s hot upstairs. She’s completely guileless. Monroe is perfect as the Girl and Ewell personifies the Everyman confronted with temptation when left to his own devices. Monroe is breathtaking in Technicolor and her performance speaks volumes about her comic potential. The subway grating scene caps her legend as a sex symbol but when you watch her performance here you see she was so much more than that.

Having sent his wife Helen and son Ricky to Maine to avoid the scorching July Manhattan summer, Richard Sherman, “keymaster” of a pocket edition publisher, stays behind to work, promising his wife to abstain from drinking and smoking. “Some husbands think just because their wives are away for the summer, they can run wild.” However, the appearance of a young blonde renting his upstairs neighbours’ apartment turns his life topsy-turvy, turning him into a bundle of nerves.

Sherman approves the covers of the pulp books: “Soup up the title a little, get yourself a cheerful and interesting cover. It’s a question of imagination, and Mr. Sherman has a lot of it,” says the narrator. To quote his wife and as a promoting film technology gag, “lately, you’ve been imagining in Cinemascope and Stereophonic sound.” From his imagination, including a parody of the beach scene in From Here To Eternity, we learn that he doesn’t feel he’s good-looking or charismatic. It’s his time with The Girl that changes him. His imagination ranges from the humorous, ridiculous, even paranoid. And he reveals his thoughts in soliloquys, which at times resemble trains-of-thought or even his subconscious.

The Girl turns out to be a typical blonde, but fun-loving, friendly, with simple tastes, understanding, trusting, and as it turns out, compassionate as seen from her sympathy for the creature of the black lagoon: “He wasn’t really all bad. I think he just craved a little affection, you know. A sense of being wanted and needed.” Oh, and she’s definitely not a Rachmaninoff girl.

My take on the skirt scene? Maybe I’d seen so many pictures of posters of it that it wasn’t a big deal, and it’s a bit overhyped. There’s plenty of superlativememorable dialogue, much of it funny, that boosts this movie. However, the Girl has the best one. When Sherman tells her he imagines a girl to love someone like Gregory Peck, she tears into him. “You think every girl’s a dope? You think a girl goes to a party and there’s this one guy, a great big hunk in a fancy striped vest strutting around like a tiger, giving you that ‘I’m so handsome you can’t resist me look? And from this she’s supposed to fall flat on her face? Well, she doesn’t fall on her face. But there’s another guy in the room, way over in the corner. Maybe he’s kind of nervous and shy and perspiring a little. First you look past him, but then you sort of sense he’s gentle and kind and worried, and he’ll be tender with you. Nice and sweet. That’s what’s really exciting. If I were your wife, I’d be very very jealous of you.” Those sentences cheered me up when I first heard them, and made me think, “Well, maybe I’ve got it made, even though I don’t look like Tom Cruise or Patrick Swayze.” After all, like Sherman, I thought, no pretty girl in her right mind wants me.

The key trends of vegetarian cuisine, the coaxial cable, 50,000,000 TV viewers, and Arthur Godfrey are time capsule elements exemplified in the America of 1955.

Tom Ewell, who reprised his role from the George Axelrod play of the same name, must be one lucky actor. After this movie, he played opposite another blonde, Jayne Mansfield in The Girl Can’t Help It.

Robert Strauss is funny as Kruhulik the lecherous greasy-looking janitor, who quotes from Porgy and Bess to describe the antics of summer bachelors: “Summertime, an’ the livin’ is easy, when the fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high.” Doro Merande has a funny line as a waitress whose pro-naturalist camp stance extends to pacifist sentiments. And Carolyn Jones, best known as Morticia Addams, plays a red-haired nurse smitten by Sherman in an imagination sequence.

For me, this is Marilyn’s best picture and best character. I fell in love with her upon first seeing this. Now, though, I consider her an old friend. So, calling all the lonely creatures of the lagoon like me out there with great imagination and no esteem. Don’t give up hope–there’s a Girl waiting out there for you.

If you’re an “extras” hound like me, “Toy Story & Toy Story 2 – The Ultimate Toy Box” is the promised land. Hands down the best goodies of any DVD to this date. Oh yeah, and you get two excellent movies too!

I won’t spend time on the movies themselves, except to say that they’re two of the most entertaining films ever made. Instead, let’s focus on why to get the 3-DVD set instead of the 2-DVD set.

The third DVD is truly impressive. You’ll find fully-animated deleted scenes; funny & interesting interviews with cast, crew, animators, etc.; an absolutly hysterical debate on “Who’s the best character?” with Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and the whole cast; some very detailed explanations of the techniques used to create the movies; and so much more. I’ve spent over three hours on Disc 3 alone so far, and there’s a lot more to go!

There are even cool hidden features. For example, on Disc 3 choose ‘Toy Story 2.’ Under the ‘Story’ section, choose ‘Jesse’s Song.’ On the next screen that appears, press the ‘Left’ arrow key on your remote control & you’ll see a question mark. With the question mark highlighted, hit ‘Enter’ for a outtake with an introduction by the directors.

The sound & picture quality on all three discs are the best I’ve seen on DVD. Helps when the whole movie was CREATED digitally, eh?

All in all “The Ultimate Toy Box” is the best DVD set around, bar none. Well worth the extra money!

I absolutely loved this movie!! Tyler Perry did it again! You will cry, you will laugh, and you will definately believe that God is Love and that he is good!!!

This is one of those movies that you watch and then wonder how come the world can’t see how common sense, character, and integrity make this planet a better place to live. “Daddy’s Little Girls” should expose the horrors that gang activity brings upon communities; the foolishness of class envy and ridicule; and the need for men and women to treat each other with respect at all times. Yet, I wonder if some people didn’t watch this movie and go right back to doing things the wrong way. I’m sure I’ll meet up with someone in a few days who saw this movie and didn’t even realize it had a message in it.

It is hard to rate a movie like this anything but 5 stars. The message was fantastic, the acting on par with any other movie made recently, and the plot flowed together amazingly well.

As far as I’m concerned Idris Elba is one heck of an actor. He is virtually flawless in his role as Monty, a man determined to do what’s right when nothing in his life is headed in the right direction. I knew very little about Elba before watching this movie. Now I know that Hollywood, Independent film makers, and even Bollywood would be making a big mistake if they didn’t make place this man in more leading roles.

Gabrielle Union is excellent as Julia, a Ivy League Lawyer who wins all her cases but lacks the street skills to get along with the little people. Union is beautiful, knows how to deliver a line, and is just a complete joy to watch on screen. Combining Elba and Union on screen was a perfect match. How could anyone help but root for these two to be successful in the end?

Louis Gossett Jr., man has this guy been in some films or what? His filmography page goes back to the 1950s! What an amazing career. He is a great addition to this film as Willie, the garage owner where Monty works on cars and dreams of one day being the owner. His character is a little one dimensional but he still has what it takes to deliver those “You better get your butts in gear” message. I will forever believe that his performance in “An Officer and a Gentleman” was one of the best performances ever, by anyone.

Tasha Smith plays Jennifer, Monty’s evil-EX and mother to the little girls. She did a great job being evil. I know this because I found myself wanting to reach through my television screen and slap her! Job well done, Tasha!

Okay, I am running a little long on my review here, so I am going to wrap this up: “Daddy’s Little Girl” is a must-see movie with a message, great acting, and a whole lot energy – definitely worth every penny it cost to make, market, and distribute.

My two year musty adores this DVD! Because I’m a teacher, I’m always looking for a procedure to design his TV time more educational – the special features in this video gather my vote! It’s nice to have a short atomize between the stories to execute your child mediate! There’s a feature that has children matching shapes, then a maze that matches engines to their special job (ie – Percy to the mail cars) . This dvd also has two songs (that will accept stuck in your head if you aren’t careful) . Our edition also came with Duncan (purchased for the same designate at Wal-mart) . Several of the stories feature Duncan and Toby which was a delight for my son who honest adores Toby. You are also introduced to Grand Mac and Neville. The short stories are inviting and delightful for you and your child (OK, maybe not you after the 50th time, but the first few times are astronomical!) Even better, we net out our trains and recreate the legend after it’s done.

The interface of the DVD is expansive! You aren’t forced to peek ad after ad, but rather you can decide to play once, settle a tale, or play constantly. My only complaint is the same with the other Thomas DVDs – why the itsy-bitsy case? It’s hard for my child to survey and settle what he wants. However, it’s a limited complaint, not even enough to change the star rating.

…but starting to conform a dinky too grand to unusual “sensibilities” for this grown up. The older, closer-to-the-original-story episodes are more fun, laughable and nonsensical. By comparison, the engines’ distinctive personalities are noticeably watered-down from the early episodes, and there is a lot less technical detail. We quiet like it, though. Beats the pants off Barney any day.

“Westworld” is Michael Crichton’s first foray into the theme-park-as-hell genre which he followed up more successfully in “Jurassic Park”, but it’s a very worthy film on its bear. Here we have James Brolin and Richard Benjamin, two bored yuppies, starting their holiday in Delos, billed as the ultimate theme park, “where nothing can go obnoxious”. Yeah, factual. Customers pay through their noses to utilize a vacation in one of three areas of the park: Romanworld, Medievalworld, and Westworld, where they can live out their fantasies and it’s fun for all. Brolin and Benjamin determine Westworld (what American boy has never played cowboy at some time in his childhood? ) and for a few days they have the time of their lives shooting up dreadful guys, starting barfights, and drawing a bead on deadly rattlesnakes. But it’s all harmless fun and games — everything’s computerized, the poor guys, the ladies of easy virtue, even the rattlesnakes; and there’s a state-of-the-art computer lab to maintain everything running smoothly. Nothing to wretchedness about…

…until the computers acquire a virus that sends them off into a learning curve that screws everything up. The first hint that something might be amiss happens over in Medievalworld, when a robot harlot decides she is tired of being a sex object and smacks a customer across the face when he tries to seduce her. Meanwhile, encourage in Westworld, the bad-guy-in-black robot challenges Brolin and Benjamin to a gunfight, but instead of being shot slow as he is every night, the dreadful guy decides to turn the tables. Oh boy, maybe it’s time to crop this vacation short… but that’s easier said than done when all of the robots have gone berserk and initiate whacking not only the customers, but their programmers as well. Murphy’s Law has proved itself once again with a vengeance. Is there any plot out of this mess? Ogle for yourself.

Brolin and Benjamin are fairly agreeable in their respective roles, nothing to write home about; but what makes this movie special is Yul Brynner’s terrific portrayal of the bad-guy-in-black; a soulless robot with the unimaginative eyes of a killer. The special effects are challenging in that they point to us how far special effects have arrive since this movie was made; this was strictly a low-budget film, but it’s a lot of fun for all that. It’s pure Crichtonian escapism.

I picked this film up about a week ago. I hadn’t seen it since it premiered help in the 1970’s. It made no impression on me whatsoever on that first viewing. Boy has time and its simplicity improved it, the second time around! This is a very timely film and I contemplate people of all ages should choose a discover at it.

This film moves from humour to fantasy to dismay almost seamlessly. And the laughable thing is- the fact that Crichton didn’t rep caught up in atmosphere or look; he concentrated on two characters simply going to a future resort, however amazing the view seems, to release and experience what in fact become examples of some of the darkest pleasures or most violent impulses inside of all of us. It really presses the suitable buttons and asks questions about what we fetch fun or intelligent.

I don’t want any review I write to spoil the films for the people yet to view the work so, let’s honest say- when the tables turn and ‘we’re on the receiving raze ‘, there’s a valid numbing truth to what this film drives home. More so today then when it was released. Mediate of some of the ‘reality based darkness’ that now litters our airwaves and the discouraged numbers who seem to be tuning in to peek it.

James Brolin really nails the ‘who cares’ feel his character needs. Richard Benjamin has to be the one who feels comical at first, then joins in with a sort of reckless abandon. And Yul Brynner is an example to everybody today (in acting, directing, effects and make-up ), of how you can horror the hell out of someone with a gape, a smile and two petite silver contact lens. (You’ll know what I mean when you accept to the scene) . Benjamin really balances him from that point, having to describe the fright the fresh reality hits him with.

I won’t do the Jurassic comparisons. I understanding it when Jurassic came out but Jurassic was a rollercoaster creep. Westworld is the yarn with the precise bite.

I highly recommend this movie. It’s an entertainment that swiftly turns to a truth I consider we all need to maintain thinking about. What do we really net curious? Or more to the point… why?

A dangerous wedding of wholesome classic animation, to adult and often dark-themed material. The risk paid off and the result is one of the greatest achievements of Disney Studios.

The animation here is first rate and the entire thing is shot like a live-action film with some extraordinary long shots, grand theatrical panning and even at one point, during Quasimodo’s song “Out There” a realistic camera flare (I did a double retract the first time I saw it!) Hunchback is filled with all sorts of tall “tricks” like this. Lighting effects here are nothing short of ravishing – often subtle they sometimes change in an instant dramatically altering the mood of the part. Frodo’s demonic song “Hellfire” is perhaps one the most unpleasant and repulsive moments to emerge from Disney and the animators let loose.

The prologue to the movie alone is a minor masterpiece and, like Beauty and the Beast, marvelously prepares us for the whirlwind of a legend to capture residence.

The complaints about the singing and dancing gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne, are simply wrongheaded. I read the Hugo classic too, and know they’re not in there. What the complainants fail to realize is these gargoyles live only in Quasimodo’s imagination. He invented these companions to ease an otherwise tortured, lonely, friendless life. The culmination of all of this becomes positive in the spectacular song “A guy like you” which finishes with pigeons flying and hearts and banners and ribbons and Quasimodo being noted and then BAM immediately upon the conclusion of the final notes, the room becomes the same shaded, dank, splintering tower filled with relics, junk and heartbreak. It’s one of the movie’s most shattering effects.

While deserved praise goes to the animators and crew, the roar talent here is, in my concept, Disney’s very best. Tom Hulce goes to the very soul of Quasimodo and gives a performance that is as poignant and shattering as anything he has done (Hulce also happened to be the best Hamlet I’ve ever seen.) Clear lines (”I am a monster, you know”) will ring in my ear forever. Hulce has a fine convey and renders “Out there” with such abandon and vigor it makes my hair stand on kill. In the serene “Heaven’s light” (which sequences into a delicate shot of the bells frantically ringing the opening theme), Hulce brings a fragility to such lines as “no face as ghastly as my face, was ever meant for Heaven’s light” that only a heart of stone would not be moved. Switching from pathos to rage, Hulce lets us feel the hidden rage and effort that this character also possesses. It is a truly worthy performance.

Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel – and the rest of the cast all sound at the top of their game creating unbelievable and luminous characters.

Alan Menkin and Stephen Schwartz accept to the heart of the matter with procure and songs – a sound – that are as integral a portion of the telling of this sage as the animation and voices.

Hunchback is a miracle of a movie!

It would not be hard to explore a more difficult account line for Disney to adapt on hide than Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, but that doesn’t mean it was a lunge in the park either. Not only is there the conundrum of how to develop Quasimodo apt to his character and at the same time not so ugly in appearance as to frighten off youngsters, but how will Victor Hugo’s gloomy commentary of 15th Century Parisian life, capital punishment and religious bigotry be accommodated? What of Claude Frollo’s lascivious desires for Esmerelda and wanton acts upon Quasimodo and gypsies? And that ending…a bit of a downer don’t you judge? Well, maintain it or not, Disney stays legal to each of these facets of the unusual…with the exception of the tragic conclusion, of course.

Talking gargoyles aside, the film really does not do enough to accommodate young viewers (and perhaps it was a mistake to market this as a kid’s movie, but you got to sell those Burger King toys somehow!) . The villain (Frollo) is among the most imperfect characters ever portrayed in a Disney movie, and unlike Jafar (”Alladin”) or Hades (”Hercules”), there is nothing funny about him. On the other hand, the animators went a slight overboard with Quasimodo, who kinda looks like a red-headed Chris Farley. And Phoebus has the personality of Al Gore…if he were any more wooden you’d have to check him for termites. Also, some very animated characters from the book are regrettably absent. Where’s Pierre Gringoire, Jehan Frollo, and Sister Gudule? Detached, the animation is breathtaking, and the finale is nearly flawless…preferred to current version if you’re a sentimental fan of tickled endings.

The movie contains a few hilarious subliminal references, as when Quasimodo (Tom Hulce) is dressed up briefly as Amadeus. The music is amazing and supports the film’s most compelling scenes: Esmerelda singing “God Serve The Outcasts” while taking sanctuary in the cathedral, the counterpoint of Quasimodo’s “Heaven’s Light” to Frollo’s “Hell Fire,” and the heart-pumping find slack the finale. Probably would have been given a PG rating if not for Eisner’s influence over MPAA.

This is a astonishing introduction to the world of wine. It’s divided into six episodes, each covering wine from a different site. Each episode is 30 minutes, so you’re not getting a ton of depth here, but that’s not really the notion. It’s a very expansive, relatively simple introduction to wine and the world of wine drinking, and it’s unprejudiced informative enough to be though-provoking for both the novice and the afficionado.

The first episode is a general introduction to the world of wine, and would construct a mammoth setpiece on its gain. It’s a brief overview of wine drinkers and producers, and is a fitting gateway into the rest of the series. Later episodes conceal the Napa Valley, Sonoma, the Central Wing (of California), and France. I would have liked to recognize less California and more exploration of old-world wine regions, but that’s unprejudiced personal preference. Spending three hours with Ted talking about California and France is exquisite tall as it is.

It’s not without its pretentious side, but let’s be fair, it’s a exhibit about wine. Of course it’s going to be somewhat pretentious. While most things are explained well, there are sometimes terms or concepts that are tossed about that might seem a dinky obtuse to the novice oenophile. This was most apparent in the first episode, owing I judge to how miniature time it has to hide so noteworthy ground. Later episodes have more room to breathe. The second episode in particular is a lot of fun, giving a substantial history of the Paris wine tasting that effect California on the way.

There’s a lot of exquisite imagery and a lot of really grand information. If you want an easy plot to inaugurate learning about wine, or if you already appreciate wine and want to bask in an undemanding chase through California and France, contemplate picking this up. I guarantee that you’ll be anxious to head down to your local wine shop and take up a few bottles.

This series is a grand intro and overview of wine. For me, it made the seemingly complex world of wine and wine appreciation fun and very accessible. I’m a fan of Ted Allen’s from Iron Chef and Curious Survey and he has the moral mix of knowledge and humor that really made this a fun and stout series. I cautiously first went to inspect “My Cousin Vinny” when Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, because–unlike many people–I don’t like Joe Pesci. I aloof don’t like Joe Pesci, BUT the role of Vincent LaGuardia Gambini in “My Cousin Vinny” is perfect for him, and his performance is stellar. For me Joe Pesci is Vincent Gambini and Vincent Gambini is Joe Pesci. And, it was my idea when I first saw “My Cousin Vinny,” as it is now after watching the DVD I unprejudiced got, that Marisa Tomei more than deserved the Oscar. It is my idea, moreover, that many times award winning performances are discredited by viewers because the actor is performing so well that it appears they are not acting at all. (Please designate that I count myself among those who stare the Oscars as politically driven; so, when I agree with them–which is seldom–I am truly standing up to be counted) .

The product description does a glowing job of describing the epic outline; although it hardly makes “My Cousin Vinny” sound nearly as droll as it is. But the movie is about more than two kids from the city mistakenly arrested for destroy in (the implicitly implied “redneck”) Alabama. The film is a light-hearted recognize of culture clashes, where all characters have stereotypical traits and stereotype the other characters themselves. The movie is also about assumptions–along with the inherent anguish of such–and how the “meaning” of these assumptions vary with regards to experience and socialization. “My Cousin Vinny” also examines gender roles–and it is here that Tomei shines–and education/science versus experience and favorite knowledge. But, most importantly, “My Cousin Vinny” demonstrates the importance of “doing the fair thing,” regardless of the consequences (and in some cases the legality of the action) . Pesci’s character finally “gets it,” and is able to obtain his way; but only through the assistance of Tomei’s character and the trust of Billy Gambini (inconsistently performed by Ralph Macchio) .

As for the other reviewer’s triad about the language in this DVD version of the movie, as compared to the bleeped television version, I have these comments: 1) the movie is rated “R,” which should have informed you about the probability of profanity; 2) while it may seem like there is a lot of profanity in the movie, it is completely applicable to the procedure these characters would actually speak–and I suspect that there is actually less profanity than it sounds like; 3) when “My Cousin Vinny” was made (1992), most movies were sharp towards increased employ of profanity–especially “R” rated movies; and 4) is overt profanity that worthy worse than suggested or ribald “comedy? ” Moreover, fair how does the sudden inclusion of (generally appropriately primitive) profanity into any dialog–films or otherwise–change the humor or invent it no longer droll? In fact, I personally hear unprejudiced as grand, if not more, profanity outmoded by children, teenagers, adults, and seniors at the store than in the movie; which I acquire is depraved misuse of profanity, but is the device of life today. For me, and I am definite many others, a titanic humorous movie, is a sizable laughable movie in spite of the language. Remember, there was a day when movies couldn’t even rely on language to be droll.

Now for the mystery I am having danger understanding: Why is this version of the DVD/VHS not being lumped together with the other versions with regards to reviews? To date (12 June 2008), there is only one review listed for this version, while there are 129 reviews for the other version currently available. This is so uncharacteristic of Amazon! And, in reach ultimate irony, it appears that there is no incompatibility between this version and the other “lower priced” (I got mine when it was sale) version, other than the fact that this version has a gold cardboard slipcase (the box inside is exactly like the other one) and the listing has the sinister actors!

When Unusual Yorkers Billy Gambini (played by Ralph Macchio) and Stan Rothenstein (Mitchell Whitfield) are wrongly accused of destroy in Beechum County, Alabama, they call in a lawyer they know – Vincent “Vinny” Gambini (Joe Pesci) . He knows how to argue and how to gather to the truth, but as a very-newly minted lawyer, does he really know what he’s doing? Everyone seems to pick an instant disapprove to this smooth-talking city-slicker, but Vinny isn’t going to let anything reach in the draw of his proving the boys’ innocence.

Well, I must admit that this is one of my all-time popular movies. On the down-side, and it is a broad down-side, the swearing in this movie is strong and almost non-stop, with the f-bomb being thrown around like confetti on Modern Year’s Eve. But, in spite of this, the movie is so well-made that you can’t back but like it.

Joe Pesci is tremendous, of course, but the rest of the cast carries their beget weight, making ever scene in the movie really work. Marisa Tomei does an friendly job as Vinny’s fiancé Ms. Mona Lisa Vito, and Fred Gwynne brings in a stellar performance in his last major role – Contemplate Chamberlain Haller. Plus, I found the storyline to be non-stop droll, and the mystery to be quite keen.

Yep, this is one of my popular movies, and I believe it will be adored by audiences for many years to approach. With the movie’s language it’s not for children, but it definitely is for everyone else!
